Joe Casey Doyle (1/3) - 2/3/15

Joe Casey Doyle is a artist that works with many different types of art. He works with sculpture, metalworking, live art and crafting. I went to his exhibition talk on campus yesterday, I am My Own Cheerleader. I went into the talk a little apprehensive, it being my first artist talk that I've been too. However I came out of it completely blown away by this guys story.

He starts off by telling of his past, growing up in New Mexico, going to art school there and what he learnt about himself as he went through the college stage. He was raised in a Catholic strong family. Most of his pieces are completely different from the next. Some of his works are made from steel- which is one of his favorite things to work with. Some are made from hand made yarns, and some from ribbon. With his pieces he likes to incorporate LGBT rights and mottos in his pieces. I think that what he does is very inspiring and very very in with our generation now. His works should be seen by everyone, in his pieces he tells stories or implies things that our society just don't agree with. Everything he does is very calculated and meticulous. Some of his newer works are videos of art, and show him struggling with ideas and processes in his pieces. If I had to pick a favorite piece of his it probably wouldn't be a certain piece, but the stories that come with each of his pieces.

I Am is a huge plane of balloon ribbon, shown curled and uncurled. He hand sews each string into a crocheted plane. This piece was based off of a hard time in his life where people were saying you can't do this, or his parents were telling him you aren't gay, its just a phase in your life. So he made a stand of this I Am, implying he can do anything. The Armored Dress is made from steel and hand cut pansies, the story behind this is his hope of being a father one day, no matter what people may say about being gay, and not having children. Burgundy is a set of some really cool hand crocheted pieces, all different colors, while they weren't made with certain intentions, he was just playing around. However, I put it on here to show how broad and talented of an artist he is.
