Tara Donovan- 2/6/15

Tara Donovan is an American artist who works out of Brooklyn, New York. She is known for site- specific installations art that is made from everyday items, that go with generic art. Growing up she didn't have a specific artist that she looked up too, but she loved crafting. After attending college at the Coroocan College of Art and Design in Washington, D.C. is when she started believing in herself as a sculptor. She then started entering her work in regional art shows, from then she started studio work in New York. She uses everyday materials, such as scotch tape, styrofoam cups, toothpicks, etc. Her pieces are made in bulk, and often have a biomorphic quality. Her sculptures have to be assembled and disassembled carefully, making it a very tedious project. She thinks of her pieces as "in terms of infinity, and the materials (to expand)". I first saw her works in class yesterday, where I was in awe at the size of her projects. They seem to immolate nature or the way nature works, which is what is intended.

The only thing that somewhat bothers me about Tara Donovan is her materials. While all of her work is insanely beautiful, it is made out of things that are recyclable. So while she is using thousands and thousands of cups, I somehow feel as if it is a waste. The internal 'refuse, reuse, recycle' that is programmed into me absolutely cringes at her work. However, I really do enjoy her pieces. What she does with everyday objects; is insane. I can't stop researching her projects, I find them fascinating and I want to see them in real life. The first photo is made from styrofoam cups, the second of straws, and the third of buttons. The last is my favorite, it being made out of cups.
